Family-Friendly Things To Do In and Around Schertz This Summer

Jun 19 2019

Sun’s Out, Fun’s Out.

Summer has arrived in Texas. Woof. Before we get into activities, let’s talk about one of the keys to a successful summer: Sun Protection Factor or SPF. It’s critical to cover up in UV blockers, especially during the hot months in Texas. Here are some sun protection tips:

All the rays. Make sure your sun block has UVA and UVB protection.

Always use SPF 30 or higher. Nowadays most major brands carry sunblock in 100 SPF.

Cover up. Hats, sunglasses and bandanas help to deflect those harmful rays enormously while also keeping you cool. You can also wear UPF (ultraviolet protection fabric) clothing to as your back up to help protect you from the sun’s rays.

Ears and Toes. These are frequently missed spots when sunblock is applied. Make sure you get them good and slathered, especially the tops of your ears and toes.

Fun Summer Activities

The 44th Annual July Jubilee event at Pickrell Park on the 4th of July features live music, kids’ activities, and festival food. It’s the way Schertz does the 4th of July and after 44 years it’s still going strong.

It’s a time for the entire community to come out and celebrate our independence and those who served and sacrificed to preserve it. And yes, there will be fireworks--big fireworks. Festivities begin at 9:15 AM.

There will also be July Jubilee festivities at Schertz City Hall including the Let Freedom Run 5k Run and Walk, where participants are encouraged to dress in their patriotic best, and a more traditional parade through downtown Schertz.

Other events in and around Schertz this summer include:

Catching the horse races at Retama Park

Spending the weekend at Crescent Bend Nature Park

Enjoying the rides at Morgan's Wonderland

Shopping at Bussey’s Flea Market

And if you and the family are looking for some water action, there’s always that modest park next door in New Braunfels.
